Credit Union Credit Cards Rank High in Customer Satisfaction
OAKLAND, Calif. (9/4/07)--Credit union credit cards ranked higher in customer satisfaction than bank credit cards, according to a Consumer Reports survey released on Thursday.
The survey focused on 21 credit card issuers. The five major credit card companies, including Bank of America, Citibank, HSBC, Capital One and JP Morgan Chase scored below credit unions. The five companies make up 80% of the credit card market (Oakland Tribune Aug. 31).
The survey was based on 36,298 responses from Consumer Reports subscribers. It was conducted last spring.
Navy FCU of Vienna, Va., scored especially high in the ratings. Navy FCU, along with several other credit unions, charge an average of 9% to 11% in interest, compared to Washington Mutual's credit cards, which charge 17%.
Amanda Walker, senior editor at Consumer Reports stated in a press release that it's important to have a credit card with a higher rating because lower-rated cards can be costly in terms of fees and interest rates.
Walker noted that credit unions are run by members, so they are "more likely to take care of you if you have a problem, and they are less likely to suddenly increase their interest rates."
